On March 2004, Jerthrude Maree was diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect, a congenital heart disease where the wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart had an incomplete closure. The following year, a second heart murmur was heard caused by mitral regurgitation, an abnormal leaking that causes the blood to flow back in the heart. The only way this can be corrected is through an open-heart surgery. Though it was diagnosed at an earlier time (she was 2 years old when it was discovered), financial difficulties kept them from giving her the surgery that she needs.
Four years had passed and they continued to raise the funds they need for her open-heart surgery. Until now, they have raised only 10% of the surgery costs. Her recent check-up showed that pulmonary hypertension is starting to build up and if the pressure continues to grow, surgery would then become impossible. There's no specific time frame when will the pressure go up, but if the surgery would be done this year then everything will be ok.
